ALBENA (Fish-Fish), this is one of the newest settlements in Dobrich region. It does not have the status of an independent settlement, but it is one of the largest and most famous resorts on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Administratively it belongs to the municipality of Balchik. Prior to the construction of the resort, this area was known as Fish-Fish. The name is of German origin and means "fish-fish". The history of this name is as follows:
During the Second World War, a small German military unit was stationed in the northern part of the beach, which probably had the task of monitoring and guarding the long and shallow beach, convenient for naval landings.
In the same area, local fishermen fished. The Germans sometimes asked them if there were any fish, which in their language meant "fish-fish." Later, the fishermen themselves began to offer the Germans fish with the same words. 18 km from Kavarna and 40 km north of Varna is the town of Balchik - one of the most picturesque on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The town is terraced and whitewashed over the sea
The coastline near the city is 4 km long. The port is used by medium-sized passenger and commercial vessels. The city attracts tourists with the uniqueness of its ancient houses and streets, which have preserved its ancient atmosphere. There are many sites that arouse interest - the Ethnographic Museum, the old Turkish mosque, the church of St. Nicholas. The Palace and the Botanical Garden are the most visited - the largest on the Balkan Peninsula and the second largest in the world. Albena is located on the land of the village of Obrochishte, 8 km from the town of Balchik, 30 km from the towns of Dobrich and Varna. At the end of 2018, Albena was chosen as a European sports resort. There is an opportunity to practice more than 40 sports for people of all ages.
