In the early 20th century, the area was visited by the famous archaeologist Karel Shkorpil, who noted that the cops are dark-skinned, cheeky, thin-legged and look like brothers. He suggested that they were probably distant descendants of the Asparuhov Bulgarians. Therefore, in 1934 the village was renamed Asparuhovo. In 1970, a large part of the old Asparuhovo was flooded by the Tsonevo dam, and the village was moved to a higher place.
