Why did we choose the outskirts of Dobrich for life? At first, we, like the vast majority of property buyers in Bulgaria, were looking for a house near Varna. After thinking, we decided not to consider the option of living in the city itself, since we were trying to just get away from the bustle of the city and exhaust gases.
When in the vicinity of Varna we did not find anything suitable in terms of price and quality (or price or quality, alas), we were advised to turn our attention to Dobrich. As a result, when we came to Bulgaria specifically in search of real estate, we already knew in which region we wanted to buy a house.
Today we can say that we were not mistaken: we are quite satisfied with life in a Bulgarian village 12 km from Dobrich.
Dobrich has everything you need for life: schools, kindergartens and universities, banks and notaries, hospitals and clinics, shops and restaurants, markets and supermarkets, parks and museums, swimming pools and hotels. Bowling is the only thing missing for complete happiness.
Actually, there was a bowling alley, but something didn't work out, and it was closed just by the time we came to live in Bulgaria. Unfortunately, something like this happens here quite often: establishments go bankrupt and move somewhere where rent is cheaper, or even simply close.
Let's start with the merits:
Low crime rate. Bulgaria is generally a fairly calm country, but life in Dobrich is even quieter than in many other cities. Crimes are rare here. Of course, this does not mean that you should walk the streets with an open bag or forget expensive things on a park bench, but there is no reason to be afraid of every shadow;
Low prices for almost everything: real estate, things, services. Of course, the cost of groceries in chain stores is the same as in the entire chain, but otherwise life in Dobrich is cheaper than in other large cities. And much cheaper than in the resorts;
Dobrich has everything you need for life. And everything that is not in Dobrich is only 50 kilometers away - in Varna. For example, airport, some types of entertainment;
Dobrich is one of the few cities in Bulgaria where foreign children could always study in schools absolutely free of charge. In fairness, it should be noted that this is the case throughout the region. For comparison: in the same Varna, a schoolchild's education during the year cost 800 euros / year earlier (since 2016, it seems, tuition fees have been canceled in all public schools, but we moved earlier);
There are no traffic jams in Dobrich. Not at all, really. And yet there are no queues and crowds. Even to a notary. Even on Saturday;
From Dobrich it is easy to get anywhere in Bulgaria. The city has a railway and bus stations, an international bus station, and only 50 kilometers to Varna airport, seaport and railway junction;
Employees of the migration service in Dobrich make an indelible impression on the guests of the city with their friendly attitude. According to the opinions of residents of other cities, such an attitude can be found far from everywhere. If there are difficulties with the paperwork, then you can always find specialists who will help with solving problems;
As for the disadvantages, the list is much shorter:
Lack of the sea within walking distance. For those who are going to come to their Bulgarian house (their apartment) only for the summer, you need to carefully weigh the pros and cons. Although it takes less than an hour to get to the sea by car, you need to think about the rationality of spending precious vacation time on the road;
