A unique archaeological park in the pretty town of Sandanski has become an interesting tourist attraction which presents the cultural-historical heritage of the region by fulfilling the ‘’Sandanski-the dawn of the Early Christianity’’.
The project of the Municipality of Sandanski is funded by the ‘’Regional development operational programme 2007-2013’’ and it is about to be completed.
The Early Christian ensemble includes the Bishop’s basilica, the Early Christian Complex and the Bishop John’s basilica as well as a part of the ancient town which was located beneath the contemporary town of Sandanski. Experts define them as exceptionally important and interesting archeological objects of national significance.
The archaeological park is about to be opened and the museum exhibition is currently undergoing completion work. The unique museum collection which consists of architectural details, coins, mosaic, marble plastic is really impressive.
Archaeologists discovered a very rare and valuable find during their work on the project – an early Christian cross dating back to the 5th or the 6th century. Visitors will be able to see the almost completely kept early Christian baptistery. Museum experts reckon it is absolutely possible to use the premise for christening nowadays, too.
